New Years' Eve, Melbourne

Melbourne's midnight celebrations

Program Director 2012 – 2014

Each year, 500,000+ people flock to the CBD to celebrate New Year’s Eve. In 2012, to ensure a safe and enjoyable event, Ros designed a decentralised event model incorporating a new programming approach that the City of Melbourne adopted.  She established four live sites on the fringe of the CBD to complement the city skyline midnight firework show. Ros was the inaugural Program Director of these sites.

Ros collaborated with contractors and stakeholders to design celebrations suitable for multiple audiences, from families to midnight revellers. Each entertainment site featured a ‘Nest’ structure hosting live multimedia and special effects while also providing a link between sites. The aim was to create new traditions across communities and build a Melbourne moment and identity.

The 'nest' was the focal point for the NYE countdown

Celebrating Melbourne’s artists and musicians through early evening programming and live DJs, the event culminated with the midnight moment featuring a commissioned pyrotechnic sound track of new work from two Melbourne composers and a live countdown, giant mirror balls and international broadcast.

NYE transformed the city landscape into a new event space. The event was designed to engage and excite the audience whilst showcasing Melbourne as an iconic city through its landmarks, buildings and parks.
