A community engagement project as part of the Shepparton Festival
Visual Arts Director 2005 – 2006
Living Recipes was a highly successful community engagement project as part of the Shepparton Festival.
Community participants were asked to share their favourite recipes for a dish or a meal that stimulated a memory, continued a tradition, recalled a time with family and friends or told a story. Six communities took part in the project. Local photographer Liz Arcus documented the project and Melbourne based film maker David Brown edited the work into a short film.

The project had three outcomes:
- six folding postcards, with matching envelope to enable the postcards to be sent to friends and family
- a short film featuring the participants talking about their recipes, screened at the SPC Factory Outlet
- a Living Recipes stall at the emerge festival and sample food was provided as cross-cultural exchange.
Living Recipes aligned with Shepparton’s identity as the food bowl of Victoria and unearthed, unpacked and presented produce, flavours and foods from the regions communities.
This project was funded by Victorian Government’s Unity Through Partnerships program and Department Social Services Strengthening Families program.
